Backpacking for Beginners

Wandering around in the wilderness and basking in the beauty and warmth of nature can surely boost your mood and help you live a healthier life. But it’s not that easy? May it be hiking, camping, or backpacking, these types of adventure can be daunting and challenging if you’re not familiar with the basics. Whether it’s your first rodeo or you’re just looking to brush up on the basics, let us walk you through what you need to know before the adventure!


Choose your destination well.


Choose a destination that is neither too hard nor too easy. You can consult with seasoned backpackers and ask what trails are perfect for you. Pro tip: pick a place close to home. This can help you feel grounded.


Go with a buddy or a group.


You’ll feel safer in the vast wilderness if there’s someone else with you! It’s always nice to have companions who can give a hand when needed.


Pack the ten essentials.


These ten items must be in your backpack:


  • Appropriate footwear

  • Navigation tools

  • Water

  • Food

  • Rain gear

  • First-Aid Kit

  • Safety items (lighter, insect repellant, whistle, etc.)

  • Insulation

  • Sun protection

  • Lamps or flashlights


Know your gear.


Packing is not enough! You need to be familiar with your gear. You should know how to use your gear before you hit the trail. Test your gear, practice, make sure you know to handle what you’re going to bring.


Do your research.


Make sure to research on the destination and the safety precautions. What are allowed in some places are prohibited in others. So be informed! Ask about local regulations, check the rules in the area.


Plan your trip.


Although being spontaneous is great, it’s better to have a plan when you’re about to go into the wilderness. Jot down your destination, your trail or your route, how you’re going to get there, what the weather’s going to be, when’s the best time to start the hike, a checklist of your essentials, and a safety plan. Here are a few safety tips:


  • Let a friend or family member know you’re and when can they expect you back.

  • Come up with an emergency communication plan.

  • Leave a note on your dashboard or in the holding area before the hike – note the trail, the route, and how long the trip will be.

  • Always carry a map and a compass.

  • Leave no trace.
