Now that Spring has Sprung: top must-dos near Glacier National Park

Spring is in full swing at the lower elevations of Glacier National Park, signaling a shift from snow-based activities as the ground begins to dry. Although the higher elevations will remain snow-covered for their usual duration, the lower areas are already dry! Even though it's a quieter period in the park, there are still plenty of exciting ways to make the most of your visit.

E-Bike the Going To The Sun Road (closed to vehicles)

We must mention this first as it's one of the top travel experiences worldwide. Take a ride on the engineering marvel known as the Going to the Sun Road when it's closed to cars through the McDonald Valley with glacially-carved peaks towering 6,000' above you. If you're a seasoned biker, we can assist with an e-bike or regular bike rental and provide a shuttle to the starting point. If you're feeling apprehensive, we can guide you through the whole experience, offering insights into the national park from a knowledgeable, local rider. Enjoy waterfalls, mountain views, and fresh air on a comfortable paved road. You might even spot some wildlife!

Pro Tip: The start area has a very small parking lot, so if you want to avoid a parking and bike transportation mess, just leave it to the pros! You can book our shuttle and optional e-bike rental here: https://www.wildnorthguides.com/service-page/glacier-park-e-biker-and-hiker-shuttle?referral=service_list_widget.

Hike

There are plenty of low elevation hikes to choose from, but be ready for unpredictable weather and possibly muddy areas. These hikes include John's Lake, Avalanche Lake, Huckleberry Lookout (with snow until mid-May), McDonald Creek, and the Danny On Trail at Whitefish Mountain Resort (with snow on some sections until mid-May), Stanton Mountain.

Leave - No - Trace Tip: Wear gaiters or accept wet feet and stick to trail sections if they are mud or water covered. If you try to avoid mud and standing water in the spring, by walking on the sides it will unnecessarily widen the trail and crush plants.

Boats on Waters

You have several choices for the type of float you want. You can enjoy flatwater, which remains swift in the spring, on the main vein of the Flathead River, or experience thrilling rapids on a guided tour on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. Although the lakes are cold, they still offer a refreshing swim. Boat rentals are available on Lake McDonald in late spring.
